Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN. March 14, 2021
Sixth-ranked Alabama survived a late flurry from LSU, holding on for an 80-79 win to capture the program's first SEC Tournament title since 1991, its seventh in program history, and became the first team since Kentucky in 2017 to sweep both the SEC regular season and tournament championships in the same season.
Alabama controlled much of the game, opening the first half on an 8-0 run powered by a layup and a three-pointer from junior guard Keon Ellis, who started in place of injured guard Josh Primo. The Crimson Tide leaned heavily on the three-ball throughout, with 78 of their 80 points coming from beyond the arc and points in the paint, connecting on 12 of 36 three-point attempts and shooting 43.4 percent from the field overall. Jaden Shackelford led all Alabama scorers with 21 points, scoring 15 of those in the second half, while Jahvon Quinerly and Ellis each added 14.
LSU refused to go quietly. Trendon Watford, an Alabama native out of Mountain Brook High School, poured in a game-high 30 points to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Jordan Wright added 25 points on four made three-pointers. The Tigers shot 40.5 percent from the field while committing just five turnovers, and had a final chance to steal the game in the closing seconds, but Watford's three-pointer at the buzzer came up short after a tip-in attempt from Aundre Hyatt and a follow-up tip from Watford and Darius Days wedged awkwardly between the rim and backboard.
The decisive sequence came with 19.5 seconds left, when Herbert Jones, the SEC's reigning Player of the Year, drove for a go-ahead layup that proved to be the difference. Jones filled the stat sheet all game, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and a steal. Alabama's bench also made a major impact, outscoring LSU's reserves 28-0 on the day, and the Crimson Tide out-rebounded the Tigers 50-43. Alabama improved to 24-6 on the season and headed into the NCAA Tournament with a stronger seeding case after the title, while LSU, finishing 18-9, fell to 0-3 all-time in SEC Championship Game appearances and awaited its own NCAA Tournament fate.
