iRacing rolls out 2024 Season 2 Patch 2 and Hotfix 1 with rain, physics, and race-server fixes
The official Steam news release adds new Outlaw models, expands weather options, and targets stability issues that could affect online races and test sessions.
iRacing published 2024 Season 2 Patch 2 & Hotfix 1 Release [2024.04.02.01] on April 2, 2024, via Steam News, with OverdriveAlex listed as the author.
The official notes describe dozens of updates, improvements, and important fixes across both the iRacing web experience and the simulation itself.
For racers, organizers, and streamers, the changes matter most where online sessions depend on stable servers, weather consistency, and predictable session management.
What the official patch adds
In the release notes, iRacing says two new “Outlaw” models have been added for the Dirt Micro Sprint Car. The Ford GT GT3 and the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 are now rain-ready, and the SRX is AI enabled.
The notes also say the maximum allowable rain rate is now capped for Official Fixed Setup Series racing. That change is positioned by iRacing as a way to keep heavy rain from overwhelming the fixed-setup experience while still preserving the challenge of wet racing.
Weather changes and session tools
The weather system receives several updates in the patch. iRacing added a new “Rain Allowed” filter on both Official and Hosted Racing pages, which should make it easier for users to find sessions that support wet conditions.
The forecast graph now correctly displays session time bars in Official Racing, while the wind speed values shown in weather information no longer always default to kmph regardless of user preferences. The weather system also includes improved wind speed calculations for Forecast Weather Mode, updated windshield wiper rain-line rendering, updated raindrop textures, refreshed opponent-car windshield effects, and updated aero spray effects.
On the web side, Hosted Races now cache selected filters, sorts, and page number so users can return to the same browsing state later. Similar caching now applies to the Spectate Hosted Races table, while iRacing notes that this functionality remains in development for the Official and League tabs of the Spectate page. Setups in Create A Race for Open Setups are now listed alphabetically.
Fixes for test drive, results, and account flow
The release notes also include fixes aimed at everyday navigation and account management. Test Drive now handles a car-selection issue affecting Official Series that change cars each week, such as Ringmeister and Draft Master, and the iRacing Web Test Drive button now offers to launch iRacing instead of failing to launch Test Drive.
In Results & Stats, an erroneous cancel icon was removed from the date range filters. iRacing also fixed a password-update issue in which users with passwords that did not meet current standards were prevented from updating their password through the UI.
Race-server stability is a major focus
One of the most important confirmed changes in the patch is a fix for a critical race-server crash related to the new physics “zippy” crash logging code. According to iRacing, additional checks and controls have been added so that vehicles showing unrealistically fast-ramping physics values are immediately removed from the world before those values can reach the race server.
iRacing explains that this protection is meant to stop abnormal physics events from crashing multiple players at once. In practical terms, the affected user will appear to have disconnected, a crash dump file is created, and the rest of the session is protected from the server processing unstable physics data. For league admins, broadcast producers, and endurance teams, that kind of stability work can be as important as new content because it reduces the odds that one faulty client can disrupt an entire field.
Installation and launch changes
The patch also adds a checkbox to “Launch iRacing” after completing a new installation. That small change may matter most for new users, who can move directly from install to launch without extra steps.
In the installation and launch flow, as in the race-server work, the patch appears focused on smoothing friction points that can interrupt play before a session even begins.
Why this patch matters for players and organizers
Taken together, the update points to a clear theme: iRacing is tightening both the presentation layer and the underlying simulation infrastructure. The addition of a rain filter, weather-system refinements, and rain-ready GT3 cars should make session selection and wet-weather racing easier to follow. The Hosted Races and Spectate cache improvements also support users who move between sessions, which is useful for streamers, race control, and league administrators who revisit pages frequently.
At the same time, the race-server and physics fixes address issues that can have outsized effects in online competition. A crash affecting one server can disrupt an entire lobby, so protections against unrealistic physics events are especially relevant in organized racing, where stability and repeatability matter as much as content updates.
The official notes also say iRacing continues to investigate and work toward fixing several other high-priority issues. That suggests this release is part of an ongoing maintenance cycle rather than a single isolated cleanup.
