Dre Greenlaw suspended one game after ejection
The 49ers linebacker was disciplined for head-butting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV during San Francisco’s Oct. 11 win.
The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, citing unsportsmanlike conduct during San Francisco’s game against the Seattle Seahawks the previous day.
Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter after head-butting Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet. The 49ers won 32-29, according to the NFL report.
Incident in the second quarter
The incident followed a late hit by Greenlaw on quarterback Sam Darnold after Darnold scrambled out of bounds. The hit drew a personal foul, and Seahawks defenders confronted Greenlaw. He then head-butted Jones and was ejected; Jones was bleeding afterward, the NFL report said.
The league said Greenlaw’s action violated its rule against conduct contrary to generally understood principles of sportsmanship.
Appeal and return timeline
Greenlaw is appealing the suspension, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a source cited by the NFL. The league said Greenlaw would be eligible to return to San Francisco’s active roster on Tuesday, Oct. 20, after the 49ers’ Week 6 game against the Washington Commanders on Monday, Oct. 19.
The NFL report also noted that Greenlaw had been suspended for one game the previous season while playing for Denver, after berating an official. He had 37 tackles in five games this season, according to the report.
